making lasting change to habits

Last year I made a commitment that we would move the team forward and that i would truly become a more impactful leader. I had indentified areas in myself and within the team, but everytime we are uncomfortable with a change we would find some reason for stopping.

The following are the steps that I used and have found that the results not only surpassed my expectations, the results have had a profound effect on the team, as they now see the effects that this has had to the business, but more importantly they enjoy what they are doing.

  1. I only picked a few small items to focus on everyday, I kept them intentionally small so that I could get
  2. I carefully showed the team members involved exactly how to do a task and then I watched as they did the task to ensure that they clearly understood what needed to be done
  3. Everday after putting the little steps in motion I would put this down in detail on a small daily log. (the name of the person, the action steps or task the time, the date)
  4. The next day I would review that the tasks and action given the day before for completion, if not I would reinforce the steps, by pulling out the log and showing the team members what we had discussed and reviewed the day before. This action of reviewing something documented has a very powerful effect, as up to then it had only been words and the staff at that point clearly see that something different is in the works, yet at that time they don’t really understand what.
  5. After reinforcing the items from the day before I will give out a few new tasks, perhaps to some different team members as I don’t want to put to much on each one everyday. I will again show them exactly what I want, they repeat the step and when I am confident that they clearly understand what it is that is expected of them I let them get on with the day.
  6. Everyday I follow the above steps I review for completion, reinforce weak areas, document progress, give new task or action steps
  7. repeat

The steps above have grown my business consistently for over a year now and the changes have really stuck, why not try these steps on your business and if you are interested in moving your business forward visit Joshua King’s own blog.
